Media Driven Vanilla Supply Crisis not to Affect Heilala Vanilla

Recent media in the United States and United Kingdom has sparked concern of a vanilla shortage, fuelling rumours of a spike in ice cream prices of up to ten per cent.

Plantation to pantry vanilla pioneers, Heilala Vanilla who grow their vanilla in Tonga say these fears are unwarranted. Director Jennifer Boggiss believes it is possibly propaganda by flavour houses to justify the use of synthetic vanilla “In reality 98% of food products sold claiming ‘vanilla flavour’ contain absolutely no real vanilla, instead using synthetic vanilla and the rumoured supply crisis could be a way to rationalise this at a time when customers are wanting to know what is in their food and there are trends toward real ingredients”.

The impact of an increase in the price of vanilla beans and the resulting natural vanilla extract and vanilla paste used as an ingredient in ice cream manufacture has minimal impact on the final price of real vanilla ice cream.  “Premium Food Manufacturers in New Zealand and Australia that use the Heilala Vanilla range of 100% pure vanilla products in ice cream typically dose vanilla at  approximately one per cent, so even if there was an extreme ingredient price increase of  50%, the ice cream price would only increase by approximately 5 cents per litre”, says Boggiss.

Boggiss said Heilala Vanilla do not expect  any issue with supply in the near future as they are not part of the global commodity market of Vanilla that is subject to trading fluctuations (similar to Coffee and Cocoa.  “We have our own plantation and work with a group of growers in Tonga that have confidence in Heilala Vanilla and are rewarded with above fair prices ( a true fair trade model)  for their vanilla”.  As a result, Heilala Vanilla can offer both security of supply and stability in prices to food manufacturers using Heilala Vanilla beans, extract and paste.

Heilala Vanilla shows strong promise in Japanese market

 Tonga’s world-class vanilla producer is confident sales in Japan will continue to grow after a recent visit to the country.

The Heilala Vanilla sales team visited department stores and cafes in Tokyo, Osaka and Kobe that stock the product range, along with two factories where Heilala Vanilla is used in the manufacture of over 160,000 biscuits per day. Read more
